Every week I'd joke with the team once we got to the village I'd say, "Welcome to my summer home!" Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. once said, "Where we love is home - home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts." There are many places that we love. Love the view, the children, and growing to love Jesus more. We aren't able to stay forever in each place and our feet leave it but our hearts don't.
This last week our feet haven't had to leave yet because we were teaching in Naknek. Naknek is our home base where we are every weekend, where we reload the crafts, food, and wash clothes before we head out on the next week. This week we didn't have to pack the plane which was nice. It was also nice to go driving around looking for bears. There was one night where we didn't have to go on a drive because the bear just walked across the front yard!
We had over 30 walk into VBS each day. Some walked in after a year at the public school, some at the Christian school and some are just here for the summer. Having a diverse makes singing the songs even more meaningful. To have a group of kids with different hardships, upbringings and views come together at VBS. To see them worship the Lord, to have them learn more of the Bible and have them memorize a verse brings much joy in my heart. Of course there's also crafts and games that happen which you're able to see their different abilities and leadership abilities come out.
It's clear that all are welcome at VBS. We made some posters, put it on Facebook and announced it in church in a small community it doesn't take much to have people know your business. Throughout the week we had people send personal invites to people with kids. Most of the ones that got personal invites showed up to VBS. Sometimes even though we know we are invited we need a personal one to get us through the door. Who can you invite into life? Maybe it's a small group, time at a lake, grocery shopping, or just hanging out with kids everywhere and chicken nuggets. A personal invite can go a long way.
This week Katy and I are hoping to make it to Manokotak to do a day camp there. Prayers that the weather would allow us to go would be wonderful! Let us know how we can praying for you or how you've seen God at work.
